“I did
my instrument rating with Karl, and he was a good flight instructor. He
constantly challenges me to do my best. He also makes sure that I am as
safe a pilot as possible.”

"I came to Karl with 1600
single-engine hours to be introduced to Commercial and Multi-Engine
flying before I went to an expediting school to earn my ratings fast.
After a few hours with Karl, I realized I was going to become
a considerably more skilled, safe and
professional pilot by staying with him. I passed both my Commercial
Multi and Single Engine checkrides on the first attempt and began flying
twins in IFR immediately after due to Karl's
instruction. I would not have
been able to do this if I had gone to the expediting school.
Within two months I had stepped up to a Turbo Seneca and Baron. I
have had several instructors over the years and Karl has been the
best. His skills, attention to
the individual student and professionalism allow him to stand apart."

"When I took
off on my first lesson I thought, “There’s no way I can do this.” I had
no idea what Karl was talking about or how I was ever going to figure
out how to fly. I also had to consider the fact that I couldn’t
afford to fly more than once a week, and that I needed an instructor who
I could get along with as well as someone who would understand my
schedule. Now, I’m well on my way to my private pilot’s certificate,
and I feel that I made the right choice in Karl as my CFI. Karl is an
excellent instructor. He’s very methodical and efficient in the way he
goes about flight training. When it was time for my first solo I felt
prepared and in control of the airplane: hard to believe considering my
uncertainty when I began. As I continue with my solo cross country
flights and training, Karl continues to be a great instructor. We work
on my deficiencies, and he keeps me honest about what I’ve already
learned. I’m looking forward to passing my check ride soon, and I’m
thinking about the future as Karl says, “flying bigger and faster
airplanes.”

"Shaking
hands with an FAA designated flight examiner who has just endorsed your
application for a private pilot certificate is a wonderful feeling and
it provided me with a tremendous sense of accomplishment. I am eagerly
looking forward to building more hours and pursuing my instrument
rating.
When I
decided to purse my private pilot certificate I looked forward to the
benefits of flying to Tahoe and pursuing last-minute weekend trips.
Having previously earned sailing, motorcycle and diving certifications,
I did not expect that obtaining a pilot certificate would be very
challenging. I thought I’d have my certificate in a month or two……..
Enter
Karl Liang. Karl was one of the first people that I spoke with when I
inquired about flying lessons. After speaking with Karl for the first
couple of minutes I knew that, for me, he would be the best instructor
available. After hours of ground school, flight training, preparation
for various phase checks and ultimately, the FAA written, oral and
practical check-ride, I knew my initial instincts were correct.
Although it took me much longer than a month or two to become a private
pilot, I am truly grateful. My genuine appreciation for aviation and my
current understanding of the complexities of aviation would never have
been obtained if it had not been for Karl. Karl taught me, as opposed
to a certificate that sits on a wall with most professional and leisure
credentials, a pilot certificate is a license to learn. I really enjoy
flying because every pre-flight, flight plan preparation, weather
briefing and airport procedure review is a learning experience for me.
I
generally use two to three words to describe people, places or events so
that I remember them for a long time to come. When I think of Karl I
think of the following three things:
1. Integrity
2. Proficiency
3. Commitment to Excellence (No….I’m not a Raider fan)
Karl
pervasively demonstrated these characteristics during our time
together. Most importantly, he was never afraid to tell me something
that I may not have wanted to hear. (i.e., solo expectations)
Karl is
very trustworthy. He never directly or indirectly charged me for time.
Frankly, he went out of his way to make sure that I was prepared for
certain phase checks, including coming to my home. When I had a very
time sensitive career change in the middle of my cross-country phase
(middle of training) he gave me the advice of a friend. Instead of an
overzealous instructor trying to generate fees and flight time for
themselves, Karl explained the importance of being able to mentally
concentrate and prepare for flying. If I was mentally focused on a
career change and relocation, it might make sense to resume flight
lessons in the future. His primary goal was for me to be a safe and
proficient pilot, no matter how much time it would take, or what
instructor received credit.
To
measure Karl’s instructor skills feedback from my phase checks and
ultimately the FAA examiner would provide the best indication. My phase
check examiners were very pleased with my preparation / skills for each
of the checks (solo, cross-country and private pilot). Most
importantly, my FAA examiner (over 30 years of experience) explained
that I had demonstrated “outstanding aeronautical proficiency” and that
I “nailed” the practical check-ride.
I
owe a tremendous portion of my achievement and more importantly, my
current dedication to flight proficiency and safety to Karl Liang. I
would recommend him to anyone. Although some flight instructors could
say that I may have been over prepared, I would respond that you can
never be over prepared when you get into the cockpit of a plane. If you
disagree with this, just go to the NTSBs home page and look at the
“incidents” section. Remember, over 90% of general aviation
accidents/fatalities result from pilot error. If you have more
questions, feel free to call me at any time".

"I am a 500 hour SEL/Instrument
rated pilot and have flown with a lot of CFI’s (both new ticket holders
and experienced, some
cowboys and some not), however I have flown with Karl once on a trip he
took with me in a Piper 235 ferry flight from KPAO to KFTG (Denver), and
I would - without a shadow of a doubt- recommend Karl to anyone who
wants to either learn how to fly, work on getting other ratings, or
better their piloting proficiency skills. I learned a lot about Karl’s
teaching skills and passion for flying during the 7.25 hr flight,
however two things that stand out as great attributes Karl possesses is
(1) his commitment to extreme proficiency and aviation knowledge (don’t
ever break altitude or heading… he will make you fly to ATP standards),
and (2) his knack to convey a rather technical point (whether it be
FAR’s, or instrument fundamentals) to a level of understanding for folks
that don’t get it for the first time. Combining these attributes along
with his patience (heck, flying 7 hours cramped in a 235 is patience
alone) and still making flying fun is very hard to do, however Karl has
what it takes to make the adventure of Aviation very enjoyable… you will
be a
better pilot if you learn from Karl… I know I am. Thanks Karl."
